The Graduate

from An Autobiography by Old Gray

/

about

Raphael: I wrote this song because I wanted an incredibly heavy, fast, and pissed-off song. Lyrically, this song deals with my discontent with where I live now, my inability to change my surroundings, and how my decision to go to college (more specifically, this college) is causing me to doubt my future and my ultimate role in society. A lot of the lyrics actually allude to an older song of ours, "City Orchards." I love that song to death but we have never played it live (and probably never will) so I wanted to keep it alive somehow. That song started with the lines, "Each night, I decorate the walls of my room with sketches of a city I've never seen" and "The Graduate" retaliates with "I’m still surrounded by these four blank walls. Every picture I’ve painted has been taken down." Also, some of the final lines in "City Orchards" were "When it's time to sleep, I lay on my back and stare at my makeshift night sky. I always forget the stars," to which this song replies, "The only difference: I don’t forget the stars anymore. I still believe they will never collapse. Maybe I’m just naïve but I wish and wish and wish." The drawing metaphors serve to reference both my obsession with art and creation as well as the scene in 500 Days of Summer, when actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt is drawing the city on his blackboard. I used to watch that movie a lot and it reminds me of a certain someone who I attribute my memories of to where I currently live. I hope that explanation made sense.

lyrics

Raph: I’m still surrounded by these four blank walls. Every picture I’ve painted has been taken down. The only difference: I don’t forget the stars anymore. I still believe they will never collapse. Maybe I’m just naïve but I wish and wish and wish. Why am I so unsure? Why do both the past and future haunt me now? Maybe I’ll leave this town when my fears become too strong; maybe I’ll leave this town when the last star falls.

Cam, Raph: Maybe I’ll leave this town when my fears become too strong.

Raph: Maybe I’ll leave this town when my fears become too strong; maybe I’ll leave this town when the last star falls.
